Sandbridge Beach – July 4th Boat Parade & Fireworks
Sandbridge Boat Parade & Fireworks!
Come celebrate our Nation’s 241st birthday by participating in the 14th Annual Sandbridge Boat Parade. From its humble beginning in 2004, our parade has grown every year with more watercraft and spectators. With legal fireworks in Mill Pond for the sixth year, the parade should have a record number of boats.
2017 Boat Theme:
The 4th of July and What it Means to Us!
Patriotic themes are always a great choice for any July 4th boat parade, and this year is no exception! So come on out… and Celebrate your FREEDOM at the annual boat parade! Decorate your boat, assemble your crew and enter your boat in this year’s contest. Awards given for best decorated boat and more.
Compete for Trophies:
• Grand Prize
• Best Decorated
• Best Theme Representation
• Best Costumes
• Best Use of Humor
• Most Creative
• Most Colorful
• Most Unusual
• Judges Special Award
With the exception of the Best Costumes category, judging will take place in Mill Pond as the parade arrives from Osprey Bay, circles Mill Pond, then enters the Bluebill and Wood Duck canals, and returns to Mill Pond. The Best Costumes will be judged at the parade start point in Osprey Bay (no longer Mill Pond) prior to the 7:15pm parade start.
Osprey Bay has a sandy bottom and is sufficiently shallow to allow participants to move from boat to boat. Boats should arrive at Osprey Bay no later than 6:30pm to insure that their costumes are judged and each vessel receives a contestant number for boat judging in Mill Pond. No number, no prize! Category winners will be announced up on the return of the boats to Mill Pond.
Sandbridge Fireworks:
Parade watercraft will return to Mill Pond prior to dusk and the start of the 9:10pm fireworks show. A July 5 rain date is scheduled. As was the case last year, watercraft will not be allowed to anchor in Mill Pond. However, boats can be secured to the banks, i.e. dock, pier, bulkhead, etc. Boat owners who are planning to participate in the parade are requested to contact Fred Greene (288-0372) to receive detailed information, i.e. route map, Mill Pond anchoring and mooring information, etc.
Please note there is limited space to view fireworks at Mill Pond. There also are not restroom facilities available. We recommend that vacationers view fireworks from the beach near Whiting, Tuna, & Pike, where you will probably be able to view the Sandbridge fireworks, as well as the Virginia Beach Oceanfront/Boardwalk display.
